El Portal

A small bird sanctuary village on the Little River

About El Portal

El Portal covers about four tenths of a square mile on the north bank of the Little River, bounded by 91st Street to the north, the canal to the south and Fifth Avenue on either side. The name is Spanish for the gate, after two wooden gates that once stood on Northeast Second Avenue and came down in the 1940s. The village incorporated in 1937 and has been a state bird sanctuary since the 1950s, under an ordinance that protects its trees along with its birds. A Tequesta burial mound stands in Sherwood Forest, dated as early as 600 AD.

Averages are weighted as total dollars over total square feet. We calculate averages based on closed sales in the MLS for the past 12 months, as of September 8, 2026. Averages are based on properties that are listed or sold for $350,000 and greater. Additional reports at all price points are available here. Price-per-square-foot figures are rounded to the nearest dollar, up or down. Where fewer than 5 closed sales exist in the window, we report the count rather than an average.
