Beautiful Historic Home located in El Cid Neighborhood.. this Colonial home has been lovingly updated and cared for to preserve it's historic value. This home holds a fascinating history as it was designed and built in The Hillcrest community in West Palm Beach in 1937. The Hillcrest community was bought in the 1980s by the FAA (Federal Aviation Authority) to facilitate the airport expansion for Palm Beach International Airport. Several homes in this community were deemed Historic and were part of the Historic Registry for the City of West Palm Beach. This particular home was located on Hillcrest Drive and was one of the premier properties at the end of the cul-de-sac. The FAA could not tear down the historic homes, and conducted a ''lottery'' these homes to be moved. The new owner needed proof of purchasing buildable lot/lots, within the City to qualify in the lottery process. The "winner" of this particular home purchased the 333 Monceaux lot, and proceeded to make it ready for the move. The coordination of the move required a structural engineer to prepare a "stem wall design" to support the weight of the Hillcrest home. The side porch and attached one car garage were demolished from the house to accommodate the move. Moving the house took place on a Sunday, early AM, all the utility lines that crossed the path from the Hillcrest community to the El Cid/ Prospect Park community were taken down and reinstalled before daylight. The sum of $40,000.00 was awarded from the FAA to the new owner as part of the lottery process toward the move. Once the home was anchored to the new stem wall spleen foundation, an addition of a Family Room, Laundry Room and an oversized two car Garage were added on a conventional slab on grade foundation. A new second floor deck, with stairs were added over top of the Family Room. A wooden side Porch and a Chicago Brick Patio were also added. Over the years, several owners have occupied this splendid residence, the most notable was Commander Chuck Mitchell, a US Astronaut and his family. During the Mitchell tenure, this house was used many times as a Republican Party headquarters, as in the garage were counters once were around the perimeter, installed for fundraising and phone solicitation. The current owner purchased the home in 2002 and made subsequent renovations. Half of the second story deck was replaced with a new Master Bedroom. The original master bedroom serves as a dressing/ sitting room. Built-in closets were added with Bermuda type doors for ventilation were added. A full house, maintenance-free, natural gas generator was installed as well as an upgraded to a 3 phase electrical panel. Triple pane, one-piece storm windows were installed over the vintage single hung existing windows. Two French doors were added, one to the second floor deck, and one in the kitchen. The Kitchen was completely renovated along with all major appliances. Granite countertops enhanced the white bead board and glass cabinets, over period correct mosaic flooring. The pantry was electrified to conceal small appliances and to be completely functional. Architectural changes were made to the dining room by adding a new wall and solid core swinging door. The driveway was widened with 8-inch concrete pads separated by artificial turf for endurance and lasting beauty. Landscaping was enhanced with curbing, a new roof installed in 2007. A side deck/ porch was added with a "summer kitchen" for outside enjoyment. This is your chance to own a once-in-a-lifetime property.
