About Plantation
Plantation is a city of about 91,800 residents in central Broward County, on former Everglades wetland named for the Everglades Plantation Company, which tried and failed to grow rice there. Frederick C. Peters bought about 10,000 acres along State Road 7, architect Russell Pancoast drew the plan, and Peters sold "long acres," one-acre garden lots; the city incorporated in 1953 with fewer than 500 residents. Plantation Acres, annexed in 1973, is a protected rural district of horse properties, served by the city's Equestrian Center at Volunteer Park. Other neighborhoods include the historic streets of Fig Tree Lane and Palm Tree Road, Jacaranda and its 36-hole golf club, Lago Mar and Plantation Isles, with gated enclaves such as Hawks Landing and Paragon Plantation. Census figures place the median owner-occupied home near $483,500. Broward Mall, the former Fashion Mall site and the 850-acre Plantation Midtown district hold its shops and offices. Plantation High dates from 1966, and American Heritage School has a campus here. Broward and Sunrise Boulevards, University Drive and the Turnpike cross the city, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International is about 20 minutes away. We follow Plantation from its acreage west to its older east side.
