About Virginia Key
Virginia Key is a barrier island of roughly 863 acres in Biscayne Bay, between mainland Miami and Key Biscayne. It became an island when hurricanes in 1835 and 1838 cut the channel now called Norris Cut. The Rickenbacker Causeway reached it in November 1947. Virginia Key Beach Park opened on 1 August 1945 after a wade-in that May led the county to set aside more than eighty acres and a half-mile of shoreline; it closed in 1982, reopened in 2008 and joined the National Register in 2002. The Marine Stadium of 1963, by Hilario Candela, reopened in October 2024.
