About Hypoluxo

Hypoluxo sits on the mainland shore of the Intracoastal Waterway, about six tenths of a square mile with no oceanfront of its own and, despite the name, no part of Hypoluxo Island, which lies across the water in Lantana and Manalapan. The name is generally traced to a Seminole word the Pierce family recorded in 1872 and rendered as water all around, no get out, though the etymology is disputed. Three Kentucky bachelors took adjoining five-acre plots here in 1884, and all three carried mail on the barefoot route down the coast. The town incorporated in 1955.
