About Riviera / Upper Riviera
The Riviera Section is one of the named districts in the city's own preservation guide, marketed by the Coral Gables Corporation from 1925 and planned for a thousand houses in themed styles. Far fewer were built. The Coral Gables Waterway is its spine, curving north along Riviera Drive toward the Biltmore golf course. Riviera Country Club occupies what was the Biltmore's abandoned south course, sold in 1944 and reworked; Brian Silva later restored the original Donald Ross layout. Three of Merrick's international villages stand here, on Santa Maria Street and along Hardee Road.
