These cities sit on a strip of land with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Intercoastal Waterway or Biscayne Bay on the other.  In essence, the beach cities are a chain of islands running down the coast of Southern Florida.  Starting from the north end of Dade county and moving south we have:

• Golden Beach - mostly mansion-style residential homes and townhomes.  No high rise buildings allowed.
• Sunny Isles Beach - mixture of homes and condos.  Many new luxury condos have been built and there is speculation that this is the new "hot spot" of North Dade County.
• Bal Harbour - mostly ultra-luxury condos, and home of the Bal Harbour shops, Miami's answer to Rodeo Drive
• Surfside - a quiet, oceanfront community made up of houses and condos.
• North Beach - a long stretch of beach communities with an even mixture of houses and condos that are moderately priced.  Some say that the real estate values are undervalued and may see a sharp increase in the future.
• Millionaire's Row - literally the gateway to South Beach, these condos are the ultra-luxury set of yesteryear.  The 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s gave rise to these high-brow buildings.  Many of them are impeccably maintained and have appreciated in price over the years. 
• South Beach - world-famous and as exciting as ever.  Features some of the most expensive condo real estate in Miami, but offers a vibrant lifestyle.  Also features an large number of historic art deco buildings, many of which have been renovated and put up for sale.  Within South Beach there are many distinct areas, each with its own charm:  Lincoln Road, Venetian Isles, West Avenue, Park, SoFi (South of Fifth Street--where real estate is seeing an unprecedented boom).
